Excerpts from our exclusive interview with Dr. A. Sonia:

Dr. Sonia, what inspired you to pursue a career in obstetrics and gynecology?

Medicine always felt like a natural path for me. Growing up, my family played a strong role in shaping my values, and from a very young age I knew that I wanted to become a doctor and dedicate my life to helping people.

During my medical education, I realized that obstetrics and gynaecology is a field where you can truly transform lives. As a doctor, you become part of some of the most emotional and defining moments in a woman’s life — from guiding young women through health challenges to supporting families during childbirth.

Being trusted with such deeply personal journeys is both a privilege and a responsibility. That sense of purpose is what ultimately inspired me to dedicate my career to women’s healthcare.

Over the years, you have handled many complex and critical cases. What drives you in those moments?

Every patient who walks into my clinic places immense trust in me, and that trust is something I never take lightly.

There have been situations where surgeries or deliveries were considered extremely high-risk, and some cases were even thought to be nearly impossible. In such moments, what drives me is the responsibility to explore every possible option for the patient.

I carefully analyze each case, consult colleagues when needed, and evaluate different approaches until we identify the safest and most effective path forward. When a patient places their faith in you, it becomes your duty to do everything possible to support them.

Patients often say you go far beyond routine treatment. How do you approach patient care?

For me, medicine is built on compassion, responsibility, and honesty. Every patient deserves thoughtful care, transparency, and the confidence that their well-being is the top priority.

I recommend surgery only when it is truly necessary. However, if there is even a small possibility that a procedure could significantly improve a patient’s quality of life, I evaluate that option carefully.

Before proceeding with any treatment, I ensure that patients and their families clearly understand the situation. I explain the condition, discuss possible treatment approaches, and share my professional perspective so they can make an informed decision.

Over the years, I have taken on surgeries that many believed had little chance of success, and thankfully many of those patients recovered well. There have also been occasions when I performed surgeries free of cost for patients who could not afford treatment.

For me, patient care does not end with surgery or treatment. Regular follow-ups and consistent monitoring are equally important. When someone comes with a complex condition, I never rush to give a quick answer — I take the time to study the case thoroughly and explore every possible option before deciding the best path forward.

You have handled several critical deliveries and infertility cases. What has that experience been like?

Some of the most memorable moments of my career come from helping women who once believed motherhood might never be possible.

I have managed extremely complex deliveries, including cases involving differently-abled patients and women with serious medical complications. I have also worked with couples who struggled with infertility for many years, and seeing them finally hold their child is one of the most rewarding experiences a doctor can have.

There have also been rare and challenging cases where women in their late 40s and even 50s were able to safely deliver healthy babies with proper medical care and close monitoring.

Your approach to treatment is often described as patient-first rather than protocol-first. What does that mean in practice?

I strongly believe that medicine should be thoughtful and responsible.

If a medication or procedure is not truly necessary, I simply will not prescribe it. Every treatment decision should be guided by what genuinely benefits the patient rather than what is routine or convenient.

Patients deserve honesty, clarity, and care that is tailored to their individual needs.

Beyond clinical practice, you are deeply involved in social service and community outreach. Why is this important to you?

For me, healthcare should extend beyond the walls of hospitals and clinics. While treating patients is an essential part of my work, creating awareness within the community is equally important.

People need to understand basic health issues and how to care for themselves and their families. It is especially important for society to be better informed about women’s health, as many crucial topics are still not openly discussed.

Through health camps, awareness programs, and educational initiatives, we work to bridge this gap by addressing topics such as menstrual hygiene, menopause, anemia, reproductive health, and preventive care.

Social service has always been very close to my heart. Being able to help people in ways that genuinely improve their lives brings a deep sense of fulfillment. When you see that your work has made a real difference, it reminds you why you chose this profession in the first place.

For me, serving the community is not separate from my work as a doctor — it is a natural extension of it. Medicine is not only about treating illness; it is also about educating, supporting, and empowering people to live healthier lives.

How would you describe your relationship with your patients?

My patients are not just cases or numbers — they are individuals whose lives and families matter deeply.

I believe trust is the foundation of every doctor–patient relationship. I always strive to ensure that my patients feel heard, understood, and supported.

Many of my patients stay connected with me for years, and those lasting relationships make my work incredibly meaningful. For me, being a doctor is not simply a profession — it is something I truly live and breathe every single day.

Looking ahead, what is your vision for the future of women’s healthcare?

Every woman deserves to be heard, understood, and cared for.

My vision for the future of women’s healthcare is a system where no woman struggles to access safe, respectful, and high-quality medical care. There is still progress to be made in areas such as maternal health, infertility awareness, menopause care, and preventive healthcare.

By combining medical innovation, education, and compassion, we can build a healthcare system that truly supports and empowers women at every stage of life.
